Google AI Overviews vs AI Mode: what's the difference for your brand?

By Ben Frampton · · 4 min read

Short answer: AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some ordinary Google results pages. AI Mode is a separate, chat-style Google search where the whole answer is AI-written and you can ask follow-ups. Both are part of Google Search and draw on pages Googlebot has indexed, but AI Mode breaks each question into many related searches ("query fan-out"), so it can cite pages that don't rank for the original query. Track them separately: a brand can do well in one and poorly in the other.

What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews appear above the usual results for some searches, usually informational or comparison questions. They give a short summary with links to sources, and the normal blue links follow below.

Key points:

  • They're triggered by Google, not chosen by the user, and only for some queries.
  • They're based on Google's search index and ranking systems.
  • The sources they link to usually overlap heavily with pages that rank well for the query, though not always the top few.

What is AI Mode?

AI Mode is a separate search experience, opened from a tab or button in Google Search. You ask a question in plain language and get a longer, conversational answer with links, then ask follow-ups.

The important technical difference is query fan-out: Google describes AI Mode as splitting your question into subtopics and running many searches at once, then combining what it finds. A question like "best electric car for a family of five with a long commute" might fan out into searches about seven-seat EVs, real-world range, boot space and charging costs.

How do they differ in practice?

What does this mean for your visibility?

For AI Overviews, classic ranking for the exact query matters most. If you rank on page one for "best CRM for estate agents", you have a reasonable chance of being among the sources. Pages that answer the query directly near the top tend to be easier to summarise.

For AI Mode, you can be cited without ranking for the user's original question, if you rank for one of the fan-out queries. That rewards:

  • Depth on subtopics. Separate, clear sections (or pages) on pricing, integrations, use cases and comparisons give you more queries to rank for.
  • Specific detail. Fan-out queries tend to be specific ("CRM with Rightmove integration"), so pages that state concrete facts match them better.
  • Third-party coverage. Review and comparison pages that rank for subtopics bring your brand into the answer even when your own page doesn't.

How do you control whether Google uses your content?

AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search, so the controls are the search ones:

  • noindex removes a page from Search entirely.
  • nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit how much text can be shown or used, in AI features and in normal snippets alike.

Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode. It only affects use for Gemini models outside Search. See which AI crawlers to allow in robots.txt and Google's guide to AI features and your website.

How do you measure them?

Search Console counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode within the Web search type, but doesn't report them separately or tell you whether you were mentioned in the answer text.

To know how often you're mentioned or recommended, you need to collect the answers themselves for your buyer questions and count, as with any other assistant. Measure AI Overviews and AI Mode as two separate engines, since their sources and answers differ. How to measure AI search visibility covers the method.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Mode the same as Gemini?

No. Both use Gemini models, but AI Mode is part of Google Search and grounded in Google's search index. The Gemini app is a separate assistant with its own behaviour, and is worth tracking separately.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to my site?

For some queries, yes: if the summary answers the question, fewer people click. For others, being a cited source can bring well-qualified visits. It varies by query type, so look at your own Search Console data rather than general claims.

Can I optimise specifically for AI Overviews?

Google says no special optimisation is needed beyond normal SEO. In practice, pages that rank well and answer the question clearly near the top are the ones most often used.

Why does AI Mode cite pages I've never seen ranking?

Because of query fan-out. The page probably ranks for one of the related searches AI Mode ran in the background, not for the question you typed.
